Conversion and hightening office Dornacherstrasse Basel

Dornacherstrasse in Basel has been home to Burckhardt+Partner's Basel office for over 40 years. In the past, the workplaces were distributed across three floors, due to constantly increasing staff numbers. In addition to the unfavorable reception situation, the spatial structure with a large number of small individual offices was no longer in keeping with the times. When the retail store areas on the first floor became available and the Department of Planning gave the green light for a heightening of the existing roof terrace, work on the new two-story offices could begin. 

Firstly, the store on the first floor was converted into an open-plan office with a workshop atmosphere, as can also be seen from outside through the display-window glazing. A single large room with exposed raw concrete supports was divided into zones by an installation that includes meeting rooms of various sizes and a kitchen. A free space between the meeting rooms and workplaces is used as an exhibition area or populated with models. The spacious reception area with its own entrance via the passage on the first floor and an auditorium that seats around 100 people round off the first floor's office. 

In parallel, on the second floor, the facade facing the roof terrace and other dividing walls were removed, and the terrace area was built over with prefabricated wooden elements. Two spacious interior courtyards with fig trees and herbs divide the work area into two clear units. 

The wood theme is evident all throughout the heightened structure: wooden windows with sills shaped as shelves or seats, wooden slats on the ceiling and hand-made library furniture create a pleasant working atmosphere. The library, with its large table, is now also the centerpiece of the upper floor. What is now a total floor space of 2,400 m² on the second floor now accommodates 120 of the 160 workplaces: from the individual office with a safe for the accounting, to the IT department's semi-open-plan space, through to the large open-space areas for the project teams. 

With these new rooms, the staff of Burckhardt+Partner, at their traditional location, now have an inspiring working atmosphere with an openness and transparency that matches the company culture.
